1 NIGBATI iwọ ba joko lati ba ijoye jẹun, kiyesi ẹniti o wà niwaju rẹ gidigidi.

1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:

2 Ki o si fi ọbẹ le ara rẹ li ọfun, bi iwọ ba iṣe okundùn enia.

2 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.

3 Máṣe fẹ onjẹ-didùn rẹ̀: nitoripe onjẹ ẹ̀tan ni.

3 Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.

4 Máṣe lãla ati lọrọ̀: ṣiwọ kuro ninu imoye ara rẹ.

4 Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.

5 Iwọ o ha fi oju rẹ wò o? kì yio si si mọ, nitoriti ọrọ̀ hu iyẹ-apá fun ara rẹ̀ bi ìdi ti nfò li oju ọrun.

5 Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

6 Máṣe jẹ onjẹ oloju buburu, bẹ̃ni ki o má si ṣe fẹ onjẹ-didùn rẹ̀.

6 Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:

7 Nitoripe bi o ti nṣiro li ọkàn rẹ̀, bẹ̃ li o ri: mã jẹ, ki o si ma mu li o nwi fun ọ; ṣugbọn ọkàn rẹ̀ kò pẹlu rẹ.

7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

8 Okele ti iwọ jẹ ni iwọ o pọ̀ jade, iwọ a si sọ ọ̀rọ didùn rẹ nù.

8 The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.

9 Máṣe sọ̀rọ li eti aṣiwère: nitoriti yio gàn ọgbọ́n ọ̀rọ rẹ.

9 Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

10 Máṣe ṣi àla atijọ; má si ṣe bọ sinu oko alaini-baba.

10 Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

11 Nitoripe Olurapada wọn lagbara; yio gbà ìja wọn ja ti awọn tirẹ.

11 For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.

12 Fi aiya si ẹkọ́, ati eti rẹ si ọ̀rọ ìmọ.

12 Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.

13 Máṣe fà ọwọ ibawi sẹhin kuro lara ọmọde, nitoripe bi iwọ ba fi paṣan nà a, on kì yio kú.

13 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.

14 Iwọ fi paṣan nà a, iwọ o si gbà ọkàn rẹ̀ la kuro li ọrun-apadi.

14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

15 Ọmọ mi, bi ọkàn rẹ ba gbọ́n ọkàn mi yio yọ̀, ani emi pẹlu.

15 My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.

16 Inu mi yio si dùn nigbati ètè rẹ ba nsọ̀rọ titọ.

16 Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.

17 Máṣe jẹ ki aiya rẹ ki o ṣe ilara si awọn ẹ̀lẹṣẹ, ṣugbọn ki iwọ ki o wà ni ibẹ̀ru Oluwa, li ọjọ gbogbo.

17 Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.

18 Nitoripe ikẹhin mbẹ nitõtọ; ireti rẹ kì yio si ke kuro.

18 For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.

19 Gbọ́, iwọ ọmọ mi, ki iwọ ki o si gbọ́n, ki iwọ ki o si ma tọ́ aiya rẹ si ọ̀na titọ.

19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.

20 Máṣe wà ninu awọn ọmuti; ninu awọn ti mba ẹran-ara awọn tikarawọn jẹ.

20 Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:

21 Nitoripe ọmuti ati ọjẹun ni yio di talaka; ọlẹ ni yio si fi akisa bò ara rẹ̀.

21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

22 Fetisi ti baba rẹ ti o bi ọ, má si ṣe gàn iya rẹ, nigbati o ba gbó.

22 Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

23 Ra otitọ, ki o má si ṣe tà a; ọgbọ́n pẹlu ati ẹkọ́, ati imoye.

23 Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

24 Baba olododo ni yio yọ̀ gidigidi: ẹniti o si bi ọmọ ọlọgbọ́n, yio ni ayọ̀ ninu rẹ̀.

24 The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.

25 Baba rẹ ati iya rẹ yio yọ̀, inu ẹniti o bi ọ yio dùn.

25 Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.

26 Ọmọ mi, fi aiya rẹ fun mi, ki o si jẹ ki oju rẹ ki o ni inu-didùn si ọ̀na mi.

26 My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

27 Nitoripe agbere, iho jijin ni; ati ajeji obinrin, iho hiha ni.

27 For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.

28 On a si ba ni ibuba bi ole, a si sọ awọn olurekọja di pupọ ninu awọn enia.

28 She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.

29 Tali o ni òṣi? tali o ni ibinujẹ? tali o ni ijà? tali o ni asọ̀? tali o ni ọgbẹ lainidi, tali o ni oju pipọn.

29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?

30 Awọn ti o duro pẹ nibi ọti-waini; awọn ti nlọ idan ọti-waini àdalu wò.

30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.

31 Iwọ máṣe wò ọti-waini pe o pọn, nigbati o ba fi àwọ rẹ̀ han ninu ago, ti a ngbe e mì, ti o ndùn.

31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.

32 Nikẹhin on a buniṣán bi ejò, a si bunijẹ bi paramọlẹ.

32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

33 Oju rẹ yio wò awọn ajeji obinrin, aiya rẹ yio si sọ̀rọ ayidayida.

33 Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.

34 Nitõtọ, iwọ o dabi ẹniti o dubulẹ li arin okun, tabi ẹniti o dubulẹ lòke òpó-ọkọ̀.

34 Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

35 Iwọ o si wipe, nwọn lù mi; kò dùn mi; nwọn lù mi, emi kò si mọ̀: nigbawo li emi o ji? emi o tun ma wá a kiri.

35 They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
