1 IBI kan mbẹ ti mo ri labẹ õrùn, o si ṣọpọ lãrin awọn ọmọ enia.

1 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men:

2 Ẹniti Ọlọrun fi ọrọ̀, ọlà ati ọlá fun, ti kò si si nkan ti o si kù fun ọkàn rẹ̀ ninu ohun gbogbo ti o fẹ, ṣugbọn ti Ọlọrun kò fun u li agbara ati jẹ ninu rẹ̀, ṣugbọn awọn ajeji enia li o njẹ ẹ: asan li eyi, àrun buburu si ni.

2 A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.

3 Bi ọkunrin kan bi ọgọrun ọmọ, ti o si wà li ọdun pupọ, tobẹ̃ ti ọjọ ọdun rẹ̀ pọ̀, ti ọkàn rẹ̀ kò si kún fun ohun didara, ati pẹlu ti a kò si sinkú rẹ̀; mo ni, ọmọ iṣẹnu san jù u lọ.

3 If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.

4 Nitoripe lasan li o wá, o si lọ li òkunkun, òkunkun li a o si fi bo orukọ rẹ̀ mọlẹ.

4 For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.

5 Pẹlupẹlu on kò ri õrùn kò mọ ohun kan: eyi ni isimi jù ekeji lọ.

5 Moreover he hath not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this hath more rest than the other.

6 Ani bi o tilẹ wà ni ẹgbẹrun ọdun lẹrin-meji, ṣugbọn kò ri rere: ibikanna ki gbogbo wọn ha nrè?

6 Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?

7 Gbogbo lãla enia ni fun ẹnu rẹ̀, ṣugbọn a kò ti itẹ adùn ọkàn rẹ̀ lọrun.

7 All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.

8 Nitoripe ère kili ọlọgbọ́n ni jù aṣiwère lọ? kini talaka ni ti o mọ̀ bi a ti rin niwaju awọn alãye?

8 For what hath the wise more than the fool? what hath the poor, that knoweth to walk before the living?

9 Eyiti oju ri san jù irokakiri ifẹ lọ; asan li eyi pẹlu ati imulẹmofo.

9 Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of spirit.

10 Eyi ti o wà, a ti da orukọ rẹ̀ ri, a si ti mọ̀ ọ pe, enia ni: bẹ̃ni kò le ba ẹniti o lagbara jù u lọ jà.

10 That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.

11 Kiyesi i ohun pupọ li o wà ti nmu asan bi si i, ère kili enia ni?

11 Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?

12 Nitoripe tali o mọ̀ ohun ti o dara fun enia li aiye yi, ni iye ọjọ asan rẹ̀ ti nlọ bi ojiji? nitoripe tali o le sọ fun enia li ohun ti yio wà lẹhin rẹ̀ labẹ õrùn?

12 For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?
