1 LI ọdún kẹdogun ijọba Tiberiu Kesari, nigbati Pontiu Pilatu jẹ Bãlẹ, Judea, ti Herodu si jẹ tetrarki Galili, Filippi arakunrin rẹ̀ si jẹ tetrarki Iturea ati ti Trakoniti, Lisania si jẹ tetrarki Abilene,

1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,

2 Ti Anna on Kaiafa nṣe olori awọn alufa, nigbana li ọ̀rọ Ọlọrun tọ̀ Johanu ọmọ Sakariah wá ni ijù.

2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

3 O si wá si gbogbo ilẹ ìha Jordani, o nwasu baptismu ironupiwada fun imukuro ẹ̀ṣẹ;

3 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

4 Bi a ti kọ ọ ninu iwe ọ̀rọ woli Isaiah pe, Ohùn ẹni ti nkigbe ni ijù, Ẹ tún ọ̀na Oluwa ṣe, ẹ mu ipa-ọna rẹ̀ tọ́.

4 As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

5 Gbogbo ọgbún li a o kún, gbogbo òke nla ati òke kekere li a o tẹ-bẹrẹ; wíwọ li a o ṣe ni títọ, ati ọ̀na palapala li a o sọ di kikuna;

5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;

6 Gbogbo enia ni yio si ri igbala Ọlọrun.

6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

7 Nigbana li o wi fun ọ̀pọ awọn enia ti o wá lati baptisi lọdọ rẹ̀ pe, Ẹnyin iran paramọlẹ, tali o kìlọ fun nyin lati sá kuro ninu ibinu ti mbọ̀?

7 Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

8 Nitorina ki ẹnyin ki o so eso ti o yẹ fun ironupiwada, ki ẹ má si ṣe bẹ̀rẹ si iwi ninu ara nyin pe, awa ni Abrahamu ni baba: ki emi ki o wi fun nyin, Ọlọrun le gbe ọmọ dide fun Abrahamu ninu okuta wọnyi.

8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

9 Ati nisisiyi pẹlu, a fi ãke le gbòngbo igi na: gbogbo igi ti kò ba so eso rere, a ke e lulẹ, a si wọ́ ọ jù sinu iná.

9 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

10 Awọn enia si mbi i pe, Kini ki awa ki o ha ṣe?

10 And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?

11 O dahùn o si wi fun wọn pe, Ẹniti o ba li ẹ̀wu meji, ki o fi ọkan fun ẹniti kò ni; ẹniti o ba si li onjẹ, ki o ṣe bẹ̃ pẹlu.

11 He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.

12 Awọn agbowode si tọ̀ ọ wá lati baptisi lọdọ rẹ̀, nwọn si bi i pe, Olukọni, kili awa o ha ṣe?

12 Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?

13 O si wi fun wọn pe, Ẹ máṣe fi agbara gbà jù bi a ti rán nyin lọ mọ́.

13 And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.

14 Awọn ọmọ-ogun si bère lọdọ rẹ̀, pe, Ati awa, kili awa o ṣe? O si wi fun wọn pe, Ẹ máṣe huwa ipá si ẹnikẹni, ki ẹ má si ṣe rẹ ẹnikẹni jẹ; ki owo onjẹ nyin to nyin.

14 And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.

15 Bi awọn enia si ti nreti, ti gbogbo wọn si nrò ninu ara wọn nitori Johanu, bi on ni Kristi bi on kọ́;

15 And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;

16 Johanu dahùn o si wi fun gbogbo wọn pe, Lõtọ li emi nfi omi baptisi nyin; ṣugbọn ẹniti o lagbarà ju mi lọ mbọ̀, okùn bàta ẹsẹ ẹniti emi ko to itú: on ni yio fi Ẹmí Mimọ́ ati iná baptisi nyin:

16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

17 Ẹniti atẹ rẹ̀ mbẹ li ọwọ́ rẹ̀, lati gbá ilẹ ipaka rẹ̀ mọ́ toto, ki o si kó alikama rẹ̀ sinu aká; ṣugbọn ìyangbo ni yio fi iná ajõku sun.

17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

18 Ohun pipọ pẹlu li o si wasu fun awọn enia ni ọrọ iyanju rẹ̀.

18 And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.

19 Ṣugbọn Herodu tetrarki, ti o bawi nitori Herodia aya Filippi arakunrin rẹ̀, ati nitori ohun buburu gbogbo ti Herodu ti ṣe,

19 But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,

20 O fi eyi pari gbogbo rẹ̀ niti o fi Johanu sinu tubu.

20 Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.

21 Nigbati a si baptisi awọn enia gbogbo tan, o si ṣe, a baptisi Jesu pẹlu, bi o ti ngbadura, ọrun ṣí silẹ̀,

21 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.
